Shaping Global Governance: AADE Inducted as Founding Member of the World Data Organization

March 30, 2026 | Beijing, China

On March 30, the global digital landscape witnessed a major structural shift with the official inauguration of the World Data Organization (WDO) in Beijing. The launch of this multilateral institution was marked by a congratulatory letter from Chinese President Xi Jinping, followed by the formal declaration of its establishment by Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang. Representing the Asia-Pacific region's research and innovation sector, the Asia Academy of Digital Economics (AADE) attended the opening ceremony as a distinguished member of the organization's inaugural cohort.

A New Multilateral Platform for the Digital Era

The World Data Organization was established with a clear and urgent mandate: to bridge the global data divide, unlock the intrinsic value of data assets, and drive the sustained prosperity of the digital economy. As cross-border trade becomes increasingly reliant on digital infrastructure, the lack of unified data standards has created significant friction. This new organization provides a centralized, high-level platform to deepen international data cooperation and refine global data governance frameworks.

Being selected for the first batch of memberships is a strong testament to AADE's recognized influence and robust institutional resources across Asia. Sitting alongside state leaders and top-tier international delegates, AADE is positioned to directly contribute to the foundational rules that will govern global data flows in the coming decades.

Aligning Global Mandates with Regional Action

The foundational goals of the World Data Organization seamlessly intersect with AADE’s strategic missions. The organization's focus on bridging the data divide directly mirrors AADE's commitment to Digital Inclusion. As a founding member, the Academy will leverage its seat to ensure that the voices of the Global South and less advantaged enterprises are represented in top-tier governance discussions, securing their equitable access to the digital economy.

Furthermore, the drive to build an international data cooperation platform operationalizes AADE’s vision for Digital Connectivity. By participating in this new global framework, AADE is better equipped to dismantle regional data silos and echo chambers, facilitating smoother cooperation between Southeast Asian tech ecosystems and the broader global market.

Governing the Future of Data

As data becomes the primary commodity of the 21st century, establishing secure and resilient governance is critical. AADE plans to utilize its position within the World Data Organization to champion its Pioneer RegTech initiatives on a global scale. By advocating for the principle of "governing technology with technology," AADE aims to help build an international data infrastructure that is not only economically viable but also secure and equitable.

Through this strategic global partnership, AADE continues to solidify its role as the leading platform for digital economic research and exchange, transforming high-level international dialogues into tangible growth for the Asian digital ecosystem.
